The Advantages and Disadvantages of Going to Medical School
The Advantages and Disadvantages of Going to Medical School MCAT Medical School Admissions For children, it is very easy to answer âdoctorâ when asked what they want to be when they grow up. While their intentions are pure and honest, their innocence blinds them from the fact that becoming a doctor is extremely challenging. If you were one of those kids who wanted to be a doctor when he grew up, youâd now realize getting into and completing medical school is no joke. The fact that you are reading this article means that you might be questioning: is med school really worth it? Getting into medical school is both exciting and challenging. Before you commit to putting in the time, effort, and money for the upcoming years of your life, itâs important to consider the following pros and cons of going to medical school: Advantages of Getting into Medical School The most obvious advantage of going to medical school is that, if you graduate, you will become a professional and licensed doctor, which is a highly respected job. You will be equipped with the ability to save lives and provide health-related services to other people. Being a doctor, is a rewarding job that pays well and opens many doors. The journey to become a doctor offers continuous learning about medical science. While your classmates, who did not pursue medical school, could be stuck at their desk jobs, you will be discovering new things, interacting with senior doctors, training at several medical institutions, and practicing the science of treating patients. Disadvantages of Getting into Medical School The medical school application process is long and arduous. From studying for the MCAT to submitting your AMCAS application to developing your medical school secondary essay strategies, the process requires immense work and focus from beginning to end. Letâs face it â" before you reap the benefits of being a doctor, you have to survive long, stressful, and expensive years of learning, training, preparing, and testing. It doesnât come easy or cheap. Applying to and attending medical school will cost you a lot of money. You have to be prepared to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars for med school tuition, books, course requirements, and years with very little, if any, income. Applying for student loans and getting into debt are serious dilemmas that med students face. In addition, medical school is not like your typical undergraduate course that you can pass by cramming or taking shortcuts. The difficulty level is a few notches higher, meaning thicker textbooks, more technical exams, higher grading standards, and more demanding requirements. In addition, you have to retain a specific med school GPA to be able to stay in the school. Making the Decision It is no secret that medical school requires a great deal of responsibility. However, if you are able to handle all of the rigors and challenges that come your way, you will enjoy a great deal of rewards â" not only monetary, but humanistic rewards that nobody can put a price on. Elementary to Middle School Transition
Elementary to Middle School Transition If your child is just finishing up elementary school, youve probably heard it all year: the transition to middle school is a big one. Classes are more challenging, teachers expect more, and theres more homework, responsibility and pressure overall, says Eileen Huntington of Huntington Learning Center. How can you help your child navigate this major change? Huntington offers these seven tips: Set expectations. Give your child an idea of whats to come. Talk regularly about the specific aspects of the school experience that will be different, including: Size of school New surroundings Number of students Number of classes Amount of homework Teacher expectation changes Grade point average Discipline and behavior expectations Focus on time management. Its time to get serious about curbing those time-wasters and bad habits. Work with your child on establishing a daily routine and scheduling time for everything: school, sleep, dinner, homework, extracurriculars and free time. Discuss the importance of planning out study sessions and prioritizing homework assignments. Work on the organizational system. Good organization goes hand in hand with time management, and students who embrace both perform better academically and are less stressed. Invest in a large binder with folders for each subject to keep everything in one central place. At school, have your child divide the locker into shelves/slots for books, take-home folders and leave-at-school folders. At home, an accordion file, stackable letter trays or a file cabinet will assist your child in keeping track of graded homework and everything else. Also, these apps for digital organization are worth a look too: iStudiez Pro, Todoist, RescueTime and Scanner Pro. Build independence. Up to now, youve probably played an integral role in school. Its essential that your child begins to take full ownership of his or her school work and grades and feel the impact of any and all choices, both good and bad. As best you can, step back as your child moves into middle school. Put your child in charge. Empower your child. A big part of being independent is learning to advocate for oneself. In middle school, teachers want students to participate in class and come forward when they dont understand something. If your childs teacher doesnt grade a test correctly or mistakenly marks him or her absent, its on your child, not you, to point out those things. With teachers, those early first impressions matter. Take a tour. Many middle schools offer orientation programs for incoming students that include school tours and other valuable information sessions. Take advantage of this opportunity if available. If theres nothing formal in place, call the school to ask about tours and any informal mentoring programs that could help your child. Teach your child to recognize when to ask for help. In middle school, its still critical that you keep the lines of communication with your child open and watch for any warning signs that he or she might be struggling. However, your child needs to be self-aware enough to identify when he or she needs help. Start talking about how to manage stress and a heavy workload and what to do when your child feels overwhelmed. Middle school is a whole new ballgame, and its important to help your child prepare. Dont worry, though, adds Huntington. A little effort goes a long way to get students ready. Lay the groundwork now and your child will have a successful middle school experience. The Interns Blog italki Team Building
The Interns Blog italki Team Building Our new summer intern Reid from the United States started work at italki on August 4th. We wanted him to write a quick blog about his first experiences working with the team here in Shanghai. The below post is written by him. My First Week at italki I (on the far left) attempt to hit a bullseye while playing darts with the other italki staff. When I walked into the italki offices for my first day on the job, I certainly had that first day at work anxious feeling. But as I met the italki team and figured out my way around the office, my nervousness quickly drifted away. I felt more relaxed as I came to realize that italki is not an overly serious, unorganized startup. It is, rather, a very efficient yet fun work environment. So yes, my first-day outfit of a suit and tie certainly stood out⦠As part of my first week the entire italki team visited a Shanghai gun range for a company bonding event. This being my first week in Shanghai, I have to say I was pretty surprised that I would be shooting guns in China of all places. italki is a very international company and as such it is hard for many of the English-speaking staff to really connect with the Chinese-speaking staff. That said, the power of sport once again flexed its ability to transcend cultural differences and bring people together: while the entire italki team was shooting bow and arrows, we were all aligned in a common cause of cheering on our colleagues to do well. And, when we later took to the gun range I didnât need to use Chinese to joke with one of my Chinese colleagues about my very poor final score⦠The entire experience consisted of shooting bow and arrows, guns, throwing darts, playing fuzball, and most all 12-year old birthday party activities (minus the guns, of course). Our team bonding event wa s, to say the least, an enjoyable, enlightening experience that allowed for all of us to connect with each other on a deeper level regardless of where we were from or what language we spoke. One of my colleagues, Karthik, shoots a bow and arrow for the first time. The employees here at italki are genuinely passionate about what they do and it shows in the quality of their work. The entire premise behind this company is to give people the power of a new language and thus a new culture; It is genuinely so amazing to watch as users from around the world go from having zero knowledge about a language to using it consistently in their daily lives. All in all, I remain excited to work at italki and gain further perspective on the world through my relationships with my international colleagues and italki users. Five Ways Common Core Benefits Students - ALOHA Mind Math
Five Ways Common Core Benefits Students Five Ways Common Core Benefits Students Five Ways Common Core Benefits Students The Common Core curriculum creates a framework for students to master sufficient in-depth knowledge in math and English in each grade level. This should help all students acquire the necessary math and ELA skills required to succeed in life and in higher education. Here are six ways common core benefits students: 1. New Standards of Curriculum and Methodology: The Common Core Math Program is designed to help students think logically and analytically with concrete understanding before arriving at solutions. This should promote in-depth understanding of math rather than simple memorization. 2. The Common Core stresses the depth of the concepts rather than lengthy syllabi that touch the concepts superficially. Quality of learning is more important than the quantity of material so students learn all the key concepts deeply through various learning methods. 3. The students taught the Common Core Curriculum learn the concepts in an encouraging atmosphere. The concepts are taught under âlearning by doingâ methods wherein students involve themselves, experiment and explore the concepts. 4. Common Core Curriculum can help improve engagement in the classroom. It has replaced the old methods where students learn through repetition and memorization. The curriculum is designed to give students mastery of the skills needed to move on to the next grade level. 5. The Common Core Curriculum is quite collaborative. The curriculum can be altered or refined as per the needs of the students or teachers.
